Chilaw Marians Crowned  SLC Major League Champions!

February 8th, 2018

Chilaw Marians were crowned Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Major League Tier A champions when they overcame the strong SSC outfit by 264 runs at the CCC grounds in Colombo. SSC who were set a daunting 540 for victory on the final day, folded up for just 275 runs with Sammu Ashan making his second half century of the match.

It was the Chilaw spinners who got into the party like they have all season, with the three spinners picking up all ten wickets to fall. Shehan Jayasuriya’s right-arm off spin yielded four wickets while Malinda Pushpakumara and Pulina Tharanga captured three apiece.

Earlier in the game, Shehan Jayasuriya and Ashen Silva made centuries to set up Chilaw’s vital first innings total of 372. Jayasuriya was also by far the stand-out player in the match with a century and half century and a match bag of 8 wickets.

Chilaw Marians CC were the only unbeaten team in the tournament as they recorded nine outright victories and one match ending tie of the 10 games they played.

Chilaw Marians are also expected to secure 3 major awards for Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Best Allrounder at this years' Dialog SLC Awards.


Chilaw Marians record biggest win of season

Oshada Fernando slams 196

​​Day 3 - CMCC displayed their dominance over Army SC, securing a massive innings and 197 run win, the biggest of SLC Premier League 2017/18 season. Earlier CMCC posted the highest innings score of the current Premier League season of 545.

Resuming on 16/0, allrounder Thikshila De Silva devastated Army SC's top order with a fiery spell of 5-1-19-3 to reduce the opposition to 43/3. Asitha Fernando picked up the next 2 wickets to corner Army SC at 81/5. Thanks to a partnership of 73 between Dilshan De Soysa 62 and Kasun De Silva 51, the solders managed to get past 150 without further loss before Shehan Jayasuriya was brought in to get the break-though capturing De Silva's wicket. CMCC Captain Malinda Pushpakumara did the mopping up operation. capturing 3 of the remaining wickets, to return a match bag of 9 for 125.

Best performances of the match were Asitha Fernando match bag of 5 for 51, Shehan Jayasuriya 118 off 108, Sachithra Serasinghe 65 and Isuru Udana 56. The highlight performance of the game was 25 year old Oshada Fernando's 196, being unlucky to miss out on a double century.


Chilaw Marians decimate Ragama CC

Chilaw Marians took "sweet revenge" for their loss to Ragama CC at last year’s final game of SLC Major League 2016/17 by handing them an innings defeat before lunch on the 2nd day of play today.

Ragama CC won the toss and elected to bat first but a fantastic bowling performance by Shehan Jayasuriya 7/22 annihilated Ragama for 57 within 30 overs.

Opening the batting for Chilaw Marians, Jayasuriya then went on to make 80 in CMCC's total of 211. Batting a second time, Ragama were in trouble against the spin trio of Shehan Jayasuriya 3/66, Malinda Pushpakumara 3/49 and Sachithra Serasinghe 4/33 who bowled them out for 148 in just 40.4 overs.

Another milestone was reached in this match for the SLC Major League leading batsman Sachithra Serasinghe who reached 7,000 First Class runs.

With this win Chilaw Marians take their tally to 8 OUTRIGHT WINS and 1 TIE in the 9 games played so far. Many experts think this should be a record winning streak recorded by any First Class Club in Sri Lanka.

Chilaw Marians play their final league game against current 2nd placed and defending champs Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) from 15-18 February at CCC grounds. It is expected to be the ultimate contest between the 2 top clubs in Sri Lanka with Chilaw seeking retribution for last years SLC Major League Title loss by just 4 points.

Chilaw Marians hold BRC to rare tie

​Chilaw Marians pulled off an amazing tie from the jaws of defeat in the high tension 3rd day's play to retain the lead in the Group B table of SLC Premier League Tournament 2017/18.

Continuing from a cautious 9/1 off 8 overs from day 2, CMCC top order batsman could not get into their usual flow and put enough runs on the board to defend a reasonable target to in the 4th innings of the game. But thanks to contributions from CMCC senior batsman Sachithra Senanayake (58) and mid order batsman Pulina Tharanga (27), the team managed to reach unimpressive 117 all out with with 45 overs of play left in the day, leaving BRC a simple target of 95 to win off 45 overs.

But the lionhearted CMCC team was not going to make it any easy for BRC to surpass that small target. Led by the ever reliable skipper Malinda Pushpakumara who opened the bowling, the Marians were on the attack to regain respect on their home turf. Again Malinda Pushpakumara took the lead in taking wickets with 5/51 and a great bowling performance by reliable allrounder Sachithra Serasinghe taking 4/31.

Fighting hard, CMCC bowled out BRC for 94 securing a rare tie in the 3-4 day game First Class cricket format in a very long time.

Chilaw Marians outclass Colombo Colts

In a highly competitive game, Chilaw Marians survived an early shock on Day 2 when they fell short of Colts first innings score by 7 runs but went on to record a 4 wicket outright win. It was the Marians 7th outright win of the season and the team remain unbeaten in the competition.

CMCC captain Malinda Pushpakumara captured 5/40 to restrict Colts to 162. Isuru Udana took 3/31 and Asitha Fernando 2/21. In reply CMCC started off well with Shehan Jayasuriya getting 50 off just 28 balls. But with an unusual mid innings collapse, CMCC were bowled out for 162.

In the Colts 2nd innings, Isuru Udana and Asitha Fernando bowled a fiery opening opening spell reducing Colts to 3 wkts for 1 run before Hashan Dumindu and Priyamal Perera put on 73 for the 4th wicket. Except for Nisala Tharaka who made an unbeaten 52 and Kaveesha Anjula 26, there was little resistance as Marians bowlers shared the remaining 6 wkts to bowl out Colts for 225.

Set a target of 232 to win with 5 sessions of play remaining, CMCC seemed in a hurry to finish the game the same day. Shehan Jayasuriya missed out on a century getting out for 95 and Kasun Vidura made an aggressive 57 to set the foundation to reach the target in 48 overs with 4 wickets in hand.


Chilaw Marians thrash Saracens

Sachithra, Oshada get 3rd ton

​​​Chilaw Marians stamped their authority on the SLC Premier League title race when they thrashed Saracens by a massive 245 runs.

Saracens who were reeling on 92/5 when play began on the final day, folded up for 180 as Chilaw Marians skipper Malinda Pushpakumara added another six wickets to his already impressive tally for the season. He went past the 50 wicket mark for the current season while his closest contender Chanaka Komasaru has 44 wickets.

Earlier Sachithra Serasinghe and Oshada Fernando slammed centuries to help Marians post a first innings total of 401. Asitha Fernando was in great form as he destroyed Saracens top order with some fiery fast bowling taking 5/47.

Sachithra Serasinghe hit 87 in CMCC second innings as he took the lead for most runs (786) in Premier League 2017/18 closely followed by Oshada Fernando on 724.



Chilaw Marians crush Badureliya by 320 runs

​​Day 3 - Oshada Fernando raced to his second century of the tournament early on day three as Chilaw Marians declared their second innings on 267/3 setting Badureliya an improbable 477 to win the match outright.

Badureliya struggled against the right arm off-spin of Sachithra Serasinghe and the pace of Asitha Fernando as their top order was back in the hut in no time.

Pathum Nissanka fought hard with a half century to deny the inevitable before Malinda Pushpakumara cleaned up the tail to end with eight wickets in the match as Chilaw recorded a crushing 320 run win.

Sachithra Serasinghe capped off a brilliant all-round performance in the match with a century and half century to go along with his second innings wickets.

Chilaw Marians outclass Tamil Union

​​Chilaw Marians continued their dominance in the SLC Premier League Tournament when they came from behind to beat Tamil Union by 6 wickets. In the process they also booked their place in the Super 8s of the tournament and have already topped Group B with one game to go.

The architect of their win once again was Malinda Pushpakumara who captured four wickets to reduce Tamil Union to 197 before Oshada Fernando and Shehan Jayasuriya hit half centuries in their run chase of 207.

In Tamil Union's first innings Asitha Fernando took 4/51 and Sachithra Serasinghe 3/68 while with the bat contributions from Oshada Fernando 81, Sachithra Serasinghe 65 and Isuru Udana 44 got CMCC to 296, just falling short by 10 runs to secure a first innings win. With the only option of an outright win remaining, Marians took up the challenge to chase down 207 for victory and got there in style with wickets and overs in hand.


Chilaw Marians hand innings defeat to SLPASC

Ashen Silva 168*

Ashen Silva returned to form with an unbeaten 168* for Chilaw Marians while Sachithra Serasinghe also hit a century to help Chilaw to 427 all-out in their first innings.

No one expected the game to end on day two but a stunning spell of fast bowling from Asitha Fernando demolished Ports Authority for 135 in their first innings, with Fernando picking up five wickets to set up the game.

Batting a second time around Ports didn’t fair any better as they were shot out for 108 to lose by an innings and 184 runs. It was the left arm and right arm spin combination of Malinda Pushpakumara and Shehan Jayasuriya who did the bulk of the damage in the second innings, as the duo shared seven wickets between them.


Chilaw Marians start season in style with win over NCC


December 9th, 2017

CMCC skipper Malinda Pushpakumara gave another wake up call to the selectors, as he picked up a match bag of 8/65 to destroy a strong NCC outfit at CMCC grounds, Katunayake today.

NCC who were set 211 for victory with 5 sessions of play remaining, struggled against spin on a tough wicket, as they were bowled out for just 116 runs to end the match inside two days and hand Chilaw Marians the first win of the tournament.
